Social Issues Theatre is excited to introduce our social impact musical dramedy, The Wonderful World of Was, written by L.A. Walker and Marcia Norris. This a heartfelt and poignant tale about a retired real estate developer who becomes a victim of Lewy Body Dementia with overlapping Alzheimers disease and how it affects his family and those around him.
Synopsis: The Wonderful World of Was follows the story of Mr. Lareaux Bordeaux, a retired Black St. Louis real estate developer living in Las Vegas, NV. Mr. Bordeaux’s wife of forty-three years, Lorraine, has passed away due to the stress of being the sole caregiver for her husband. Their daughter, Hadleigh, has no interest in managing her father’s care and only cares about her inheritance. Jolie, Mr. Bordeaux’s assistant of twenty years, is now being forced by Hadleigh to become his caregiver or quit her lucrative salary and benefits. Jolie’s sanity is supported by the love of her and the Bordeaux’s longtime St. Louis friend, Yahvette, who lives in the condo complex on the same floor as Mr. Bordeaux. Yahvette’s “life of the party” energy is a pleasant distraction from the tense relationship between Hadleigh and Jolie and Mr. Bordeaux’s frequent dementia episodes. Yahvette’s forgetfulness causes her to wonder if she, too, has dementia. The production emphasizes the importance of loving care, teamwork, and good medical guidance.
